Job Description Specific Skills and Work Performance
Fit, Repair, and Alter Clothing
Take a customer’s measurements to fit, repair, or alter clothing to their specifications, pay close attention to the type of fabric and the general construction of the garment they are working on.
Construct Garments
Constructing garments to the customer’s specifications, estimate how much time and effort is needed to create the garment.
Measure Customers
Carefully measure their customers, use tape measures and other tools to ensure their measurements are correct.
Advise Customers
Advise possible types of fabrics and patterns with in-depth knowledge to help clients better understand their own needs.
Maintain Sewing Equipment
Use a variety of sewing machines and other items, as well as perform routine maintenance on their sewing machines.
Area of Specialization: Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment. Superb fabric and cloth sewing and altering skills with a desire to provide a great experience for customers.
o Sewing –must possess exceptional sewing skills.
o Design and fashion knowledge – should have a substantial understanding of design and fashion principles, know how to choose fabrics, accessories, and patterns. Must know how to accurately measure the specific measurement of patterns.
o Creativity –advise customers about fabrics and patterns, and they must have the ability to visualize how a garment will look before it is finished, and must also be capable of choosing the appropriate garment parts
o Interpersonal skills –work one-on-one with their clients with excellent communication skills, also be capable of communicating effectively with coworkers and superiors.
